Sanctuary of Pietralba
In the Val d'Ega, there is a place that has attracted pilgrims from all over the world for centuries: the Sanctuary of Pietralba (Maria Weissenstein). This magnificent baroque structure is perched above Monte San Pietro at an altitude of 1,520 metres and represents hope, comfort, and faith. The central votive image is the Pietà, Our Lady of Sorrows, with her deceased son Jesus on her lap. Like few other images, it represents intimacy and pain, but also confidence. The first chapel was built by Leonhard Weissensteiner in 1553. Since then, many buildings have been added, as the site has always been perceived as a special place and visited by many people. This is proven, not least, by the numerous votive offerings found here as tokens of gratitude.
