The Tax Collector of Cornedo
Above the Valle Isarco towers Castel Cornedo, once an imposing sentinel on the ancient access route to the Val di Fassa. Here lived Ulrico, the tax collector, a man with greedy eyes and a false smile. He imposed excessively high taxes on travellers and grew rich from their misery. No one dared to oppose him; his power was too great, his position at the castle too secure. But his greed did not go unpunished. A wise lady from the Val di Fassa saw through his scheme and found a way to outwit the greedy tax collector, without breaking the Count's promise. Thus, Ulrico's fate took an unexpected turn – and the saga of the tax collector of Cornedo became a story about the power of wisdom and righteousness.
